So I was in Los Angeles this past weekend and I went to see the Jacques-Louis David exhibit at the Getty Museum. Well, I've always been a big fan of David from my college art history classes, but I always remembered him from painting gigantic portraits of Napoleon and his contemporaries.
So when I arrived at the Getty, I was truly expecting to see more sketches of Napoleon and the like. Instead, I found this painting of Cupid and Psyche (click link above).
Or, more accurately, a very slashy Cupid with a "Yeah, I just fucked Psyche" shit-eating grin on his face. I literally did a double take. This was a fanartist 200 years before his time!
For those who don't know the story behind this picture, Venus, the goddess of love, was very jealous of the mortal Psyche's beauty, so she sent her son Cupid down to make her fall in love with a hideous-looking mortal. Well, instead Cupid started shagging Psyche himself on the condition that she never asked who he was (which is probably why his wings are hidden behind the bed pillows and his bow and arrows are also cleverly off to the side).
Instead of portraying Cupid as angelic (as he is so often portrayed in art), David opted to make him a very slashy, hot, snarky teenager boasting a devilish just-been-fucked grin that literally had me laughing for a long time.
For those of you in Los Angeles, you have to see this painting in person while it is there. It truly is centuries before its time. Otherwise, its permanent home is in the Cleavland Museum of Art.
